For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Toyota Mirai are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW i4 doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The Mirai has standard Whiplash Injury Lessening Seats (WIL), which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the WIL system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The i4 doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Both the Mirai and i4 have rear cross-traffic warning, but the Mirai has Parking Support Brake (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The i4’s Cross Traffic Warning doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the Mirai and the i4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Toyota’s powertrain warranty covers the Mirai 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than BMW covers the i4. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the i4 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 4 times as many Toyota dealers as there are BMW dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Mirai’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than BMW vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 27 more problems per 100 vehicles, BMW is ranked 9th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than BMW vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota third in overall reliability. BMW is ranked 8th.

The Mirai can travel longer on a full tank of hydrogen than the i4 on a full charge:

For better traction, the Mirai has larger tires than the i4 (235/55R19 vs. 225/50R18).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Mirai has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the i4.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Mirai’s wheelbase is 2.5 inches longer than on the i4 (114.9 inches vs. 112.4 inches).

The Mirai’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (50% to 50%) than the i4’s (48.4% to 51.6%). This gives the Mirai more stable handling and braking.

For better maneuverability, the Mirai’s turning circle is 2.5 feet tighter than the i4’s (38.5 feet vs. 41 feet).

The Toyota Mirai may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 300 to 750 pounds less than the BMW i4.

The Mirai has .2 inches more front headroom, .7 inches more front legroom, 3.2 inches more front shoulder room, .1 inches more rear headroom and .1 inches more rear shoulder room than the i4.

With its sedan body style, valet key and remote trunk release lockout, the Mirai offers cargo security. The i4’s hatchback body style, non-lockable folding seat and non-lockable remote release defeat cargo security.

A power rear sunshade and manual rear side window sunshades are standard in the Mirai Limited to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The i4 doesn’t offer a rear or rear side window sunshades.

According to iSeeCars.com the 2025 Toyota Mirai retains 47.84% of its original value after 5 years, significantly more than the 31.88% resale value of the 2025 BMW i4 after five years, which can save the Toyota’s owner up to $8947.85681 in depreciation.
